BEES AND BEAR CANYON
Honey Bees were originally imported to the US from Europe in the 17th century. Honey bees now help pollinate many U.S. crops like fruits and nuts and in a single year, one honey bee colony can gather about 40 pounds of pollen and 265 pounds of nectar. Bear Canyon and the surrounding areas provide an abundance of native wildflowers and the steep granite cliffs/rock outcroppings are home to several wild beehives. Our hives are placed on private properties around the Albuquerque valley and our Bees are helping to pollinate the local flowers and plants! Here are just a few they help pollinate:

-
Desert Marigold, Baileya multiradiata.
-
Firecracker penstemon, Penstemon eatonii.
-
Common Yarrow, Achillea millefolium.
-
Common gaillardia, Gaillardia aristata.
-
Whitestem paperflower, Psilostrophe cooperi.
-
Desert globemallow, Sphaeralcea ambigua.
Critical honey bee populations in the United States have been declining in recent years due to many factors, creating concern about the future security of pollination services in the United States.
